Maya Angelou was an American poet, author and civil rights activist. Her most popular publication, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969) is a memoir of her formative years and illustrates how strength of character and a love of literature can help overcome racism and trauma.

Samuel L Jackson is an American actor most notably known for his roles in Spike Lee's "Do the Right Thing" and Quentin Tarintino's "Pulp Fiction". He attended Morehouse College and became involved in fighting for civil rights during his time there. Upon graduation, he joined the Black Image Theatre Company .


Aretha Franklin will always be remembered as the “Queen of Soul,” she won 18 Grammys and was the first woman inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. But she is less recognized for her impact on the Civil Rights Movement. Franklin toured with Dr. King, doing free concerts to help fundraise and bring awareness to the movement.

"Reflections in Black Museum: African American History on Wheels" stopped by Euclid High School's Booster Club Gymnasium yesterday. This traveling museum highlighted African American inventors and their life-changing inventions, such as the door knob, gas mask and even the Super Soaker.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was one of the most prominent leaders in the Civil Rights Movement. He fought for equality and human rights of all people through peaceful protests, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the March on Washington. He remained at the forefront of change for our country through his impactful roles in both the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968, but his legacy continues.

Motown changed the sound of music, forming the blueprint for music we love today. Some of Motown's legendary artists includes The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye and The Jackson 5.


In 1946, Former Cleveland Browns player Marion Motley, was one of the first African Americans to break the color barrier in professional football. Marion Motley was elected to the Football Hall of Fame in 1968.


Ava DurVernay is an African American filmmaker. She is the first black female director to be nominated for a Golden Globe. Currently, Ava DuVernay is the highest grossing black woman director in American box office history. She is known for directing and producing numerous movies and television shows, including Selma, 13th, When They See Us and Queen Sugar.
