Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports

What is PBIS?

PBIS is an approach we use to establish the behavioral supports and social culture needed for all students to achieve social, emotional and academic success. PBIS applies a three-tiered system of support and a problem-solving process to enhance the capacity of the Chardon Hills staff to effectively educate all students. 

PBIS has been shown to be effective in:

  • Reducing discipline problems

  • Improving overall academic outcomes

  • Reducing bullying behavior

  • Improving social/emotional competence.

The three behavior expectations at Chardon Hills are:

Be Respectful

Be Responsible

Be Ready to Learn

These expectations are taught to all students throughout the school year. There are rules and procedures for all areas of the building. Many of them can be found on the Chardon Hills behavior matrix below.

How are students acknowledged for appropriate behavior at Chardon Hills?

Students are rewarded for following the behavior expectations in the following ways:

Student of the Month

  • Teachers choose 1 student each month based on the Chardon Hills Core Values

  • Students are called down to the cafeteria to have donuts and juice with the administrators

  • The student receives a Student of the Month t-shirt

Friday’s Child

  • Teacher chooses 1 student each week that has displayed exemplary behavior

  • Student is announced on Friday morning to come down to the office

  • Classrooms lineup in the hallways at 9:05 for a Friday’s Child Parade where they parade through the school and are celebrated

All That and a Bag of Chips

  • Each teacher may fill out 2 “All That and a Bag of Chips” certificates monthly for students who displayed exemplary behavior and/or academics

  • Teacher sends student to the office with the award immediately to receive a bag of chips and a positive phone call home by an administrator

Preston Panther

  • Once every quarter Preston Panther visits each classroom

  • At the end of the day Preston chooses 1 student who was excellent behaviorally and academically the entire day

  • Teacher fills out the Preston Panther certificate and turn it into the office along with Preston at the end of the day

  • The next morning that student is announced on the morning announcements

Best Behavior Bonus
Every 4-5 weeks there will be a reward for students who have displayed positive behaviors at Chardon Hills.  Any student who has received an office referral or 3 MIRs within the time frame may not participate in the Best Behavior Bonus reward.

Panther Bucks
Panther Bucks are passed out by any staff member in the school to students who are displaying appropriate behaviors throughout the day (Respectful, Responsible, Ready to Learn).  Students write their name on the panther buck and it is placed in a grade level bin. At the end of each day 2 panther bucks are drawn from each grade level and those students will receive a treat from the treat bin.  Panther bucks accumulate throughout the week in the grade level bin.

Cafeteria Champs
At the end of each lunch period, classes that exhibit proper behavior in the lunchroom receive a sticker on the Cafeteria Champs chart.  When a class reaches 10 stickers, they will receive an extra recess provided by the cafeteria staff.  

What happens when students demonstrate challenging behavior?

Teachers utilize proactive strategies in order to minimize the number of behavior errors. These strategies include reviewing behavior expectations, establishing classroom routines and procedures, pre-correcting students before infractions occur and establishing positive relationships with students.

When behavior infractions do occur, teachers are encouraged to use a continuum of consequences, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Restorative conversations

  • Non-verbal cues

  • Loss of privilege

  • Parent contact

  • Written apology

  • Minor Incident Referral

How can parents get involved?

Parents are welcome and encouraged to assist with PBIS implementation at Chardon Hills. Some ways parents can get involved are:

  • Serve as a representative on the PBIS team or Family School Partnership Committee

  • Assist with events

  • Discuss school-wide expectations with your student at home

  • Assist with developing community partnerships

How do I get help if my child is struggling with behavior?

Despite our best efforts, students sometimes engage in negative behavior. If your student has received one or more office discipline referrals, and you are concerned about his/her behavior, please contact one of the staff members listed below. They are eager to help and are equipped to provide the necessary support for your student to be successful.
