Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year at Chardon Hills STEM School!

We are excited to have students back in the building, in our classrooms and look forward to a year filled with learning and growth.

Our dedicated staff strive to challenge each student to grow according to their abilities, utilizing research based best practices and analyzing data to drive instruction and set goals for improvement. They are committed to ensuring that our students’ learning experiences are active, engaging, and fun.

We believe that parent involvement is crucial to our students’ academic and social success, and we look forward to working together as partners in your child’s education. We are honored to have you as part of our Chardon Hills Family.

Once again, welcome back and we are excited to achieve great things together this year.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Stinchcomb & Mr. Mayer

Our Vision

To instill a love for learning and exploration in our students through experiential learning and a creative curriculum. Science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) will be integrated across the disciplines to stimulate each child's creativity and natural curiosity in order to combine the content with innovative teaching methods and an engaging environment to encourage every individual child to reach their maximum potential. Each child will be prepared to compete with all the same age peers from anywhere in the world.

Our STEM Approach

Our school uses the Engineering is Elementary Curriculum from the Museum of Science: Boston, designed to foster engineering and technological literacy. The students are engaged in project-based learning where they work alone and in groups to solve real-life problems.

Our Curriculum

The curriculum at Chardon Hills STEM School is high quality and based on research. We have embraced the Science of Reading which emphasizes the importance of explicitly and systematically teaching phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Our teachers use evidence-based instructional practices to help students develop these critical reading and writing skills so they can expand their knowledge and language effectively.

It is important that all our students benefit from explicit and systematic instruction. Our teachers break down the content of an area of learning, and provide comprehensive explanations, and step-by-step guidance until students are ready to demonstrate their learning independently. During explicit instruction teachers sequence the content and provide small chunks of new information. They utilize the I do, we do, you do strategy, monitor students, provide immediate feedback, and provide plenty of time for students to practice and apply what they have just learned. Students are always active learners, engaged, and have plenty of opportunities to respond(chorally, echo, cloze, partner share, note taking, response cards, etc).

We also incorporate the Science of Reading into our Math Curriculum. We are focusing on problem-based and visual learning to create fun and engaging environments that invite inquiry and discovery. We use hands-on problem-based activities to promote deep understanding of the concepts being taught.

Technology is also an integral part of our curriculum as we provide an iPad/chromebook for use during lessons for every student in the building. Students participate in both small group and whole-class reading and math lessons, with instruction designed to address student strengths and needs.

Gifted learners engage in challenging lessons throughout the day that encourage them to take ownership of their learning. Additionally, all students have opportunities to extend their learning through participation in field trips and extra-curricular activities.

Our Promise

Chardon Hills is committed to working with families to provide students a rigorous education in a supportive environment. We will communicate regularly about student progress, school events, and what your child is learning in school. We promise to be your partner in helping your child succeed.

Our Expectations

Chardon Hills STEM School requires students and families to complete an application and go through a selection process to be considered for admission. Students will be required to follow a dress code and, along with their families, pledge to meet the "Chardon Hills School Promise" developed by our Family School Partnership Committee.
